We are totally falling for you, Calgary…
By Leisa Fuller
In spite how the varying opinions on the change of weather, there is no denying that the changing of the leaves is breathtaking to behold. And don’t get me started on pumpkin spice lattes!
The fall season is often short in Calgay, so it can be tempting to forego putting any effort in to fall decor and simply let summer wane in to winter. But, as entertaining returns to the indoors, and thanksgiving approaches, all it takes is a few simple additions to make your front porch feel like a warm invitation to enter.
The brilliance of summer flowers and lawns start to fade, you can easily and inexpensively add a splash of colour back by adding fall flowers to your flower beds or planters. Flowering mums, aster, goldenrod and ornamental cabbage all add rich warm colour and withstand the cooler temperatures.
A basket of gourds, a welcome mat and a wreath of fall folliage all create an inviting touch. Stylish laterns with flameless candles on timers adds light and a warm glow as the days grow shorter. If your front door is a ways from the street, its a good time to add flood lights or pathway lighting and make sure all your exterior fixtures have working bulbs.
After last years newsworthy pumpkin shortage in Calgary, consider picking up yours early this year. As long as you hold off on carving them, they will last many weeks and add a beautiful shot of colour. Check out this tutorial on using pumpkins as planters, brilliant!
